Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A programme of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.
This site consisted of a poorly preserved deposit of mainly birch brushwoods and twigs orientated approximately east-west. The recorded brushwood elements of the deposit ranged in size from 10-25mm in diameter and 0.18-0.98m in length.
The site is located immediately adjacent to and south of Site 13LIS08 but clearly represents a separate structure with up to 0.2cm depth of peat between the nearest elements of both sites.
The surrounding peat consists of non humified sphagnum peat with frequent eriophorum.
This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
