Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A programme of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.
Site 13LIS27 consisted of poorly preserved mainly ash, birch and oak brushwoods, laid approximately parallel and orientated east-west. This deposit covered an area 4.7m long by 2.2m wide, but no clearly identifiable structure could be recognised. The elements ranged in size from 6-60mm in diameter and 0.1-1.7m in length, but due to the state of preservation no worked ends could be identified.
Site 13LIS28 consisted of poorly preserved brushwoods, laid approximately parallel and orientated north-east/south-west. This deposit covered an area 1.45m long by 0.9m wide, but no clearly identifiable structure could be identified. The elements ranged in size from 18-50mm in diameter and 0.65-1.15m in length, but due to the state of preservation no worked ends could be identified.
The surrounding peat consists of sphagnum with patches of eriophorum.
This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
