Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A programme of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.

Site 13LIS25 consisted of the remains of two poorly preserved brushwoods identified as hazel and holly. They covered a combined area of 1.4m long by 0.05m wide and were orientated north-east/south-west. The two brushwoods had no direct physical relationship other than their proximity and similar orientation.

Site 13LIS26 consisted of longitudinally placed hazel brushwoods measuring 2m by 0.58m orientated east-west. A number of smaller brushwoods ranging in diameter from 6-30mm running transversely to those noted above may suggest the site of a possible hurdle trackway, although the remains were so disturbed that this cannot be confirmed.

The two sites were located in very close proximity and must be considered as being potentially related.

Both sites were located in raised bog of hummock and hollow sphagnum peat, with clumps of eriophorum,

This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
