Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A programme of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.
This site consisted of a small poorly preserved platform measuring 3.1m by 1.1m orientated north-east/south-west. The platform mainly consisted of parallel hazel brushwoods, 7-40mm in diameter and 0.1-2.9m in length. Some roundwoods, ranging from 61-78mm in diameter and 0.5-2.26m in length, appear to have been laid at right angles to the brushwood.
The site was located on the field surface in raised bog peat, characterised by sphagnum peat, skinny reeds and grasses, and some small patches of eriophorum.
This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
