Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A programme of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.
Three small longitudinally placed brushwoods, recorded at the time of assessment, could not be identified at the time of excavation.
Discrete deposits of densely packed sandstone, which may have been heat shattered, and marl mixed with loose peat deposits, were thought to be disturbed elements of a burnt mound. After excavation, however, these deposits are not thought to be of archaeological significance. They may represent spoil or disturbed material from a previously excavated burnt mound in the vicinity - (Killoran 253 (RMP TN036-050071)).
This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
