Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A program of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.
This site consisted of longitudinally placed large brushwood and roundwoods (between 0.03m and 0.21m in diameter) located in the drain face and on the adjoining field surface. It was dense at the southern end and more dispersed at the northern end. It was located in laminated fen peats with bog bean and reeds present. With east-west longitudinally laid roundwoods with bruswoods lying and woven transversely throughout with a high amount of packing material, this track is cut by sausage turf channels.
Preliminary dating of samples from the site resulted in two dates, 196-1 BC (UBA 25558), and 352-166 BC (UBA 25559).
This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
