Monitoring was carried out at the Limerick Institute of Technology (L.I.T), Thurles Campus, Co. Tipperary prior to the construction of a new strength and conditioning building and associated facilities. The proposed development is located north-east of -TN041-035 (earthwork). The monument is contained within the grounds of the campus but outside the present site and will not be impacted upon. Recent testing? of the monument suggests it to be a modern quarry rather than an enclosure.
The proposed development was the subject of a desktop assessment in 2012 (carried out by IAC Ltd), a geophysical survey in July 2013 (carried out by JM Leigh Surveys) and further assessment including test trenching (carried out by IAC Ltd) also in July 2013?. Nine trenches were excavated on site and no features of archaeological potential were exposed. No further archaeological mitigation was recommended. Despite this the grant of permission included a condition that ground disturbance and any demolition be monitored at the site.
Topsoil stripping at the site of the new building and a new waste water line was monitored on 18 November 2013. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were identified and no finds were recovered.
