A fifth phase of monitoring of topsoil removal was carried out at Cloonfineen, Co. Roscommon on 19 August 2013. This phase concerned the south end of the east gravel ridge. The topsoil stripped area measured approximately 80m north-south by 50m and comprised the top of the ridge and the slopes down to the neighbouring fields on the east. On top of the ridge a thin topsoil layer, 0.2m in thickness, came directly down on to a sand and gravel deposit containing frequent small and medium sub-rounded cobbles and occasional boulders. On the slope of the ridge the topsoil generally was up to 0.4m thick and overlay orange/brown silty sand subsoil with frequent pebble and cobble inclusions. No archaeological material was uncovered.
