The Office of Public Works has been granted ministerial consent to construct a replacement tour guide office at Boyle Abbey, Co. Roscommon. The footprint of the proposed building, which is located within the grounds of the National Monument and immediately north-west of same, was previously tested (Read, 2003). The foundations for the building will comprise a relatively shallow raft foundation over an area measuring c. 10m east-west x 7.5m. The entire raft foundation was excavated by hand to the required foundation depth. The layers encountered were post-medieval/modern in date as evidenced by the artefactual material recovered. A much disturbed cobbled surface was exposed within the foundation footprint. No other archaeological finds or features were noted.
