A re-assessment field walking survey was carried out in Cornafulla Bog in July 2013. The bog is 242ha in size and is located south-west of Athlone and south-east of the small village of Cornafulla. The bog was in full production at the time of the 2013 survey apart from a few fields in the extreme south-eastern extent where drains were in place but no production had taken place for a couple of seasons, if at all.

Cornafulla Bog was surveyed during the 1992 Peatland Survey carried out by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (IAWU) at which time 47 sites were recorded. The majority of these sites were in Cornafulla townland immediately north-east of a dryland island. The sites comprised field surface sightings of worked wood and short lengths of light brushwood toghers. No archaeological work was carried out in this bog in the interim.

Two possible Road-Class 3 togher sites were recorded during the course of the 2013 re-assessment survey which were located to the south-east of the dryland island. These were located along the same drain face exposure c. 50m apart. The cluster of sites recorded in 1992 was no longer extant.
