Monitoring of ground works associated with Caherduff Group Water Scheme took place in 2013. The new pipeline was located at the Neal c. 5km south of Ballinrobe town. The project involved the laying of c. 4km of water pipe. Works took place in road, verge and in field across the townlands of Caherduff, Knock North, Lecarrowkilleen and Muckrussaun.
A small area of burnt stone and charcoal-rich soil was discovered in Knock North Townland (E517730, N756197). This may represent part of a burnt mound or fulacht fiadh. Works were diverted away from the area of archaeological concern and the deposit was preserved in-situ. A sample of the deposit was taken for radiocarbon dating. A date for the site is pending.
