Monitoring took place during the construction of a short stretch of road, 150m long, referred to as the Killala inner relief road. The road works incorporated the site ‘Tobernakill’, a holy well (MA022-017002) which was not visible above ground prior to construction. The north side of a rectangular, worked rubble and mortar surround was partly uncovered where it was located 0.4m below the footpath area. The masonry and design of the well, which incorporated yellow brick and a metal outflow-pipe, appeared modern. An organic deposit which may be ditch fill was located to the west of the well. The deposit contained a rough-out for a rotary quern and iron slag. A radiocarbon date for the deposit will be forthcoming.
