Pre-development testing was carried out on 18 September 2013 at a site at Shrule, Co. Mayo. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a private dwelling house, domestic garage, proprietary effluent treatment unit, percolation area and all associated services. The proposed development is partly within the constraint for an abbey (MA122A005001). It is located just west of Shrule village on the Mayo side of the border with County Galway, in two fields of pasture enclosed by dry stone walls. No archaeological features were visible within the proposed development site. The abbey was located over 40m away to the west-north-west.
Testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of five trenches located to best cover the development area. The trenches measured 44.7m, 12.6m, 16.7m, 16m and 58.2m long respectively, 1.8-2m wide and 0.2-0.85m deep. Below the topsoil was natural subsoils and bedrock. The topsoil contained animal bone, modern pottery sherds, modern glass fragments, red and yellow brick fragments, one oyster shell, two un-inscribed clay pipe stem fragments and a circular cast iron object. The bedrock was found as high as 0.2m below the surface.
Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during the pre-development testing.
