The site at Boharnamoe was discovered during advance archaeological testing undertaken in 2012 by Ross MacLeod and Patricia Long (Licence Ref.: 12E374) as part of the proposed Ardee Bypass. Excavation work was undertaken on 3 September 2013. The site consisted of a heavily truncated burnt mound surviving only as an oval trough with no associated burnt mound spread. A sample of alder charcoal from the basal fill of the trough has been dated to the early Bronze Age period (2334–2137 BC).
