The site at Ballygowan 1 was discovered during advance archaeological testing undertaken in in 2012 by Ross MacLeod and Patricia Long of Rubicon Heritage (Licence Ref.: 12E374) as part of the proposed Ardee Bypass. Excavation work at Ballygowan 1 was undertaken on 4 and 5 September 2013. The site consisted of a heavily truncated burnt mound surviving only as an oval trough and an associated burnt mound spread. Hazel charcoal from the primary fill of this trough produced a date suggesting that this site was in use in the early Bronze Age (2288–2056 BC).
