Test trenching was undertaken in order to explore the possible archaeological components of the medieval tholsel and gaol, and the plot of land to the rear of the site, formerly occupied by 19th-century cottages, now demolished. A total of six trenches were excavated, amounting to 30.07 sq m.

In two of the test trenches, located in the open area to the north of the extant gaol structure (Trenches 2 and 5) a dark humic layer, possibly medieval in date, was encountered at a depth of 1.45m and 1.6m respectively below present ground level. However no artefacts or other datable material were recovered.

The remaining test trenches did not reveal any medieval layers subsurface. It is possible that earlier structures on this site may have had basements which may have removed any medieval layers. However, as no stray medieval artefacts were encountered it is also possible that contemporary undercrofts may have been located here in the medieval period as has been found elsewhere (for example, Gaelscoil playground Mary Street, fireplace site Nicholas Street). Rubble infill in the interior of the gaol was found up to 1.5m in thickness. No archaeological layers were identified, however archaeological layers may occur beneath this level.

Several features were identified in Trenches 1-3 and 6 (external to the gaol), and are probably post-medieval/early modern in date. These consisted of mortared walls, brick floors, and brick fireplaces, as well as a narrow stone culvert or drain, but these were deemed to be of likely 19th or early 20th century in date, and would appear to be the remains of 19th-century structures marked on the OS 1st edition map.
