Monitoring was carried out of groundworks associated with the landscaping of a garden area and footpaths to the east of the existing nuns’ cemetery (19th century), which lies within the boundaries of St Mary’s Convent, Sisters of Mercy, Barrack Street, Limerick. The site is situated within the Englishtown area of Limerick city and within the line of the city wall and town defences (IG: 557827 657827). The site is located within the zone of archaeological potential for LI005-017---, Historic Town and specifically LI005-017047 - Dominican Priory with extant wall and LI005017121 - burial ground.
All the ground works were confined to the top 0.7m of the site, and thus remained within the layer of overburden on the site. It is known that the town wall is located sub-surface in the garden area but is in excess of 1.5m below present ground level. Monitoring revealed that this overburden consisted of concrete, metal, brick mortar and general debris and rubbish. No archaeological layers were encountered during the monitoring.
