Monitoring of the sewerage scheme and all associated works at Patrickswell Sewerage Scheme, Co. Limerick has continued from 2012. A single area of archaeology was revealed at NGR 152021 150161 in Barnakyle townland.
An amorphous spread of burnt stone measured approximately 8m by 3.5m, extending to the west beyond the limit of the excavated sewerage pipe easement. The deposit was 0.03-0.13m thick and characterised by brownish black silty sand with frequent inclusions of heat-affected sandstone pieces and charcoal fragments. No cut features were observed beneath the spread.
A radiocarbon date of 1955-1772 cal. BC (3545±27 BP; UBA-23698; to 2 sigma) was obtained from hazel charcoal from the deposit, placing the activity in the Early Bronze Age.
