An archaeological assessment along with testing was undertaken in a proposed forestry plantation in Cahirguillamore due to the proximity of a deserted settlement to the south of the plantation. A license was sought for the testing of 28 acres prior to the approval of the plantation. In total four fields were tested and 21 test trenches were excavated across the entire site.
The topsoil for these four fields was a black moist sticky peat with no inclusions while the subsoil is a very compact moist blue grey clay with no inclusions. The topsoil was spread out and raked on several occasions to examine for stray finds however nothing was recovered.
No archaeological features or artefacts were found in the test trenches.
