Site 24-6, Ballyquin was discovered during monitoring of topsoil stripping for the Bord Gáis Networks Gas to Great Island scheme (12E0356).
The excavation revealed a burnt stone mound overlying a sump, trough and pit. The mound and the sump continue outside the excavated area to the south-west.
The oval sump measured at least 4.5m by 4m and was 0.8m deep. The trough was sub-rectangular, measured 1.75m by 0.7m and was 0.35m deep with vertical sides and a flat base. The badly degraded remains of a wooden lining were recorded, with at least three planks laid horizontally in the base. Five post-holes were excavated in the base of the trough and a pit was found nearby. All the cut features were filled with burnt stone. The overlying burnt stone mound measured at least 17.2m by 15.8m and was 0.35-0.4m thick.
It is anticipated that a radiocarbon date will be obtained from the trough.
