Monitoring was undertaken of dredging works in Waterville, Co. Kerry. The dredging works facilitated the construction of (a) an outfall pipe to Ballinskelligs Bay and (b) an intake pipe from Lough Currane to feed the new water treatment plant at Scarrif, part of Waterville Water and Wastewater Scheme. The trench for the outfall pipe in Ballinskelligs Bay was excavated at optimum low tide using a land-based excavator on the foreshore. It was excavated to a maximum depth of 2m and width of 3m. The excavated seabed material consisted of coarse sand, gravel and moderate inclusions of stone. The intake pipe at Lough Currane was excavated by land-based excavators working from the shoreline and a pontoon. The excavated material consisted of sterile gravel. No evidence of any archaeological artefacts, structures or features were uncovered during the excavation of the pipeline trenches.
