A programme of archaeological testing was carried out on behalf of ESB International (acting as agents for ESB Networks) at Trien townland located south-east of Listowel, Co. Kerry. The project will involve construction of Knockanure 220/110 kV Substation. This substation will connect into the existing 220 kV transmission line which runs from the Tarbert substation in Co. Kerry to the Clashavoon substation in Co. Cork. It will also connect into the existing 110 kV transmission lines which run from Tarbert to Trien in Co. Kerry and from Trien to Dromada in Co. Limerick. An assessment of the proposed development was completed by Moore Group in 2010. The report recommended testing of the proposed development site. Testing involved the excavation of 6 trenches using a tracked digger with a 1.2m-wide ditching bucket. Due to ongoing exempted diversion works for an existing power line, the remaining trenches were not excavated due to safety considerations and inaccessibility.
