Monitoring was carried out as part of a proposed shop redevelopment at 48 William Street, Galway. The site is located within the zone of archaeological potential for Galway City (GA094-100) and the structure that currently occupies the site can be dated to the late medieval period and is registered as a protected structure under the City Development Plan (2011-2017). The archaeological works undertaken were carried out in response to a planning condition attached to the development (Planning Ref.: 13/86).
It was initially proposed to excavate two small pits at ground floor level within the interior of No. 48 William Street adjacent to the north-west/south-east building walls. This was to facilitate the positioning of mini piles, required to support a new internal steel structure. The excavation of these pits, plus an additional one to locate a foul sewer, was subject to monitoring. No features of archaeological significance were identified. The design for the shop redevelopment has since changed and mini piles will no longer be required. Therefore there will be no further ground disturbance.
