Monitoring was carried out at 17 Dame Street during the construction of a lift shaft. No. 17 Dame Street is a Protected Structure and is located within the boundaries or zone of archaeological potential for Dublin city (DU-018-020). A 3m x 3m area was excavated for the lift shaft. Excavations within the area of the lift shaft continued to a depth of 0.67m after which hard rock was reached. A specialist contractor cut out approx. 0.3m of rock to reach an acceptable minimum level for the lift shaft pit. Rubble and red brick as well as the remains of a red brick chimney breast were uncovered during the excavations. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded during the monitoring of the 0.67m depth of excavations for the shaft.
