Monitoring of site investigations at a proposed residential development at Charlemont Street, Dublin 2 was carried out during September 2013. The programme of works was carried out by Faith Bailey and Johnny Ryan of IAC Ltd in response to planning conditions attached to the development by Dublin City Council (Ref.: 3742/10) and An Bord Pleanála (Ref.: Pl29S.238212). Monitoring of ground disturbances was recommended in the EIS Chapter undertaken by IAC Ltd in 2010.
A total of 16 site investigation pits were excavated across the development area. The work was subject to constant monitoring. As predicted within the EIS chapter, post-medieval deposits were identified within the development area. Four possible walls were identified within pits 101, 102, 104 and 110. Garden soils containing post-medieval inclusions such as red brick, glass, china and pottery fragments were identified in all the trenches with the exception of 112, 115 and 116. The depth of the soils varied from 0.4m to 1m. These clearly relate to the terraced houses that are marked within the development area on the first edition OS map (1839) and later OS mapping from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
No features or artefacts were identified during the course of monitoring that relate to activity that predates the post-medieval period.
Further monitoring during construction of the development will provide the opportunity to assess the extent of the post-medieval remains on site and subject them to the appropriate levels of recording. Additional monitoring will be carried out under an extension to licence 13E313.
