Testing was carried out at the site of a proposed single house, located at Commons Little, Newcastle, County Dublin (OS Sheet 21). The proposed development area is located within the zone of archaeological potential for Newcastle Village (DU020-003/026-010) and immediately adjacent to a burnt mound site (DU026-089). The assessment was carried out in response planning conditions attached to the development by South Dublin County Council (Planning Ref.: SD08A0723).
Test trenching took place at the site on 2 August 2013. This was carried out using a JCB mechanical excavator, with a flat, toothless bucket. A total of three trenches were mechanically investigated across the test area which covers c. 400m2. No features of archaeological significance were identified in any of the trenches. The construction of the building that was demolished prior to testing had resulted in a significant amount of horizontal truncation across the site.
