An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of a Nursery Unit at Drumadonnell Primary School. The works are concentrated in the south-west corner of the primary school property. The proposed development site lies beside DOW 035:53 and DOW 035:033. DOW 035:033, a State Care monument, is a carved cross of uncertain date. It is now located in Castlewellan Forest Park. It was previously built into the north gable of Drumadonnell School. DOW 035:053 is identified as an Early Christian settlement site.
A total of 4 test trenches were excavated across the proposed development using a machine fitted with a toothless bucket under strict archaeological supervision.
There were no archaeological features uncovered during this evaluation.
