An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of a residential development on lands surrounding Ferry Quarter, 14, Shore Road, Strangford.
A total of 9 test trenches were excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket.
For the most part, the test trenches identified no evidence of archaeological deposits and the southern section of the site appears to have been subject to cut and fill activity in the recent past. Archaeological deposits were identified within Trenches 5 and 6 and consisted of the probable remains of a burnt mound. These trenches were located in what is currently the landowner’s garden and in order to minimise disruption, no further work was conducted within this area. This section of the site forms a later phase of the development and the developer is fully aware that further archaeological work will be required here. All exposed archaeological deposits are to be fully excavated and recorded.
