An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed demolition of a residential property and the construction of 8 apartments at 87E Bryansford Road, Newcastle. The proposed development site is located adjacent to DOW 049: 007, identified on the SMR as an Early Christian rath and known as Cillian’s Fort.
This phase of the development consisted of the insertion of a foundation within the site. Monitoring of a single foundation trench was conducted at the site. The test trench extended roughly east-west and was excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. The trench was excavated to its full depth of approximately 1.2m. Topsoil was removed to a depth of 0.3-0.4m and directly overlay naturally occurring subsoil.
No evidence of archaeological deposits was identified during the course of this evaluation.
