A programme of archaeological testing was carried out in advance of development of a campsite at Rossnowlagh Lower, Co. Donegal. The development area is located to the east of Rossnowlagh beach, towards the northern end of the beach. A caravan park is located to the immediate south of the area for development and there is a residential development immediately to the east and north-east. There are several residential dwellings located to the north and north-west. Access to the site is from the adjacent road to the west.
The proposed development consists of a campsite with 21 pitches and a service building, campsite reception office, playground and connection to existing public sewer and associated site works. The overall area of the site is 0.52 hectares. It is a roughly rectangular-shaped site orientated north-east/south-west.
There is only one recorded archaeological site within the townland of Rossnowlagh Lower, located c.1km north-east of the area for proposed development: DG103-009 - a midden. An examination of cartographic and documentary sources did not indicate any evidence for archaeological material within the area of the site or in close proximity to it. Site inspection did not indicate any features of archaeological significance.

A total of 15 test trenches were excavated across the area for proposed development. Six (1m x 10m) trenches along access roads, 1 (1m x 15m) across the area for the service block and 8 (1m x 5m) trenches on the pitch areas. All trenches were excavated using a toothless grading bucket and were excavated to subsoil.

Extensive testing across the site did not yield any evidence for archaeological finds, features or deposits, therefore no further archaeological recommendations were considered necessary for this development.
