An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the construction of a replacement multi-purpose sports, cultural and leisure facility at St Columb’s Park, Derry. The proposed development site lies within the area of St Columb’s Park, which is a registered Historic Park, L-050.
A series of 6 test trenches were excavated across the proposed area of development by a back-actor fitted with a toothless bucket. Test trenches 1, 2 and 3 were excavated through the all-weather pitch, while Trenches 4, 5 and 6 were excavated in the grass area around the existing St Columb’s Park Leisure Centre building. The trenches revealed widespread modern disturbance associated with the current leisure centre. No archaeological deposits were uncovered during the course of the evaluation.
