Supervision of tree felling was undertaken in a commercial forestry plantation in the vicinity of Beal Boru, Killaloe, Co. Clare. Beal Boru is a National Monument (ref. no. 591) and is listed in the Record of Monuments and Places as the site of a ringfort (CL045-031001-), a house of indeterminate date (CL045-031002-) and a ringwork castle (CL045-031003-). A section of the forestry plantation is located on sloping ground to the south of the monument and monitoring of felling was undertaken to comply with a condition in the grant of the Felling Licence issued by the Department of Agriculture, Food and The Marine. Works were undertaken with hand tools in the vicinity of the monument and all trees were felled downslope to the south. They were then removed by a machine located outside a 30m exclusion zone extending from the monument and the stumps and roots were left in situ. No ground reduction works were carried out as part of the felling project.
