Testing was conducted between 29 May and 7 June in association with the Cootehill Water Supply Scheme, Co. Cavan. A total of 1,006m2 of test trenches were excavated throughout the development. These comprised 980m2 of machine-excavated test trenches and 26m2 of hand-dug test trenches. Test trenches 4–6 were not excavated, as the proposed access road will now not form part of the project. No archaeologically significant material was uncovered in machine-excavated Trenches 1–3, nor within hand-excavated Trenches 7–9. The soil from Trenches 7–9 was metal detected and a percentage was also sieved, but nothing of archaeological significance was found. A small number of prehistoric features, prehistoric pottery and flints were found in Trenches 10–14 at the site of a proposed reservoir in the townland of Benwilt.
