An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of 20 social and affordable houses for FOLD Housing Association within the grounds of the former PSNI Station, School Road, Forkhill, Co. Armagh. The proposed development site lies to the immediate west of the historic settlement of Forkhill.
A previous archaeological evaluation was conducted for Phase 1 of the site, under licence AE/12/35. This evaluation identified no evidence of archaeological deposits.
For Phase 2 of the development works, a total of 9 test trenches were excavated across the area using a back-actor fitted with a toothless bucket. A number of trenches, in particular Test trenches 3 and 4, uncovered a lot of modern disturbance, the former associated with the use of the site as a PSNI station the latter with Phase I of the development.
No archaeological remains were uncovered in the course of the evaluation.
