An archaeological evaluation in the form of test trenching was carried out at the site of a proposed housing development at Church View, Charlemont, Co. Armagh. The evaluation was carried out in response to a request for further information from NIEA Historic Monuments in relation to the archaeological potential of the site with specific reference to the site being located within the historic village of Charlemont (ARM004-012) close to scheduled monument Artillery Fort (ARM004-001) which is situated 250m to the north of the site.
Three test trenches were excavated at 10m intervals along the length of the proposed development. Testing proved that the western portion of the site, within which the main focus of building is to take place, had undergone previous ground disturbance with up to 2m of modern infill overlying natural subsoil deposits. During the course of testing a single shallow agricultural ditch (0.75m wide and 0.25m deep) was uncovered extending north-east/south-west across the site. Pottery recorded from this feature suggested a post-medieval date. The feature underwent partial excavation. No other archaeological deposits or artefacts were identified during the evaluation.
