An archaeological evaluation was conducted prior to proposed redevelopment works at 140 Donegall Street, Belfast. The proposed development site is located within the area for archaeological potential for Belfast.
In advance of the test trenching and the commencement of ground works, the site owner had to insert piles along the southern edge of the development and create a site entrance off Little Donegall Street. Before the piles could be inserted, the ground had to be cleared of obstructions, in the form of reinforced concrete, walls etc. The trench for the piles and the site entrance were both excavated by a back-actor fitted with a toothless bucket and under archaeological supervision.
The initial ground works uncovered extensive archaeological remains in the form of brick walls and brick tunnels, associated with the industrial buildings that once stood within the proposed development area. On this basis additional testing will be required to better determine the full extent and level of preservation of these buildings, in advance of the construction of the proposed apartments.
