An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of an industrial building and associated car parking at Langford Lodge Hanger, 97 Largy Road, Crumlin. The proposed development lies immediately to the south of ANT 058:061, identified on the SMR as an undated enclosure. The enclosure was probably destroyed by the construction of the airfield.
6 test trenches were to be excavated, however, upon arrival at the site, it became clear that Test trench 6 could not be excavated. This was due to live services extending along the length of the trench and the location of 2 concrete pads extending across its proposed route. The remaining 5 test trenches were excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. In all trenches, a compacted gritty clay with frequent inclusions of stone, modern building materials and fragments of metal was removed and gave way to naturally occurring subsoil, which was an orange plastic clay.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
