Planning permission for the construction of a proposed gabion wall located at Gibson’s Green, Whiteabbey has been granted in consultation with the Centre of Maritime Archaeology providing that monitoring of excavation of the wall foundation trench is carried out. Monitoring was recommended with specific reference to the development being located near a 17th-century bawn (ANT007-008) and historical reference to an encampment of King William’s army in the vicinity.
Monitoring was carried out over the site from 26–30 August 2013 revealing that the gabion wall trench was excavated primarily through modern infill deposits along the existing lagoon shoreline. No archaeological deposits were noted during monitoring of ground reduction works.
