It is proposed to construct a mixed-use development within the boundaries of Industrial Heritage site IHR10369:002 Millfort Flax Spinning Mill and Blackstaff Flax Spinning and Weaving Mill. Archaeological works were carried out in advance of development in response to planning conditions imposed by NIEA Historic Monuments. While Blackstaff Flax Spinning and Weaving Mill buildings survive in good preservation to the rear of the development site, buildings associated with Millfort Flax Spinning Mill have been demolished in modern times, the sole surviving element of this building being the façade of a 20th-century warehouse which fronts onto Springfield Road. A measured and photographic survey was carried out of the wall façade in advance of its demolition while monitored test trenching was carried out within the footprint of the proposed development. The results of the testing suggest that the proposed development is located within an area which was largely undeveloped as part of the industrial complex.
