An application for a Maritime Construction licence associated with the construction of a 35m section of rock armour defences at AES Ballylumford Power Station, Islandmagee, Co. Antrim has been granted in consultation with both NIEA Historic Monuments and the Centre of Maritime Archaeology providing that monitoring of excavation of the rock armour foundation trench is carried out. Monitoring has been recommended with specific reference to discovery of Mesolithic remains associated with the construction of nearby Ballylumford Harbour.

Monitoring was carried out over the site between 9–17 September 2013 revealing that the rock armour foundation trench was excavated primarily through modern infill deposits along the existing lough shoreline. No archaeological deposits were noted during monitoring of ground reduction works.
