Test trenching which took place in 2012 in advance of the construction of sewerage shafts and tunnels at five locations in the centre of Athlone found three stone-built post-medieval or modern walls, unstratified artefacts including a Mesolithic flint blade and post-medieval pottery, glass and clay tobacco pipe. A medieval deposit of animal bone was also found.
