A pre-planning consultation with Waterford City Council for a proposed development requested an archaeological assessment to include geophysical survey and testing. The site lay within Waterford City boundaries to the west of the built-up urban area in a greenfield setting on north-facing pasture land overlooking the River Suir. A disused farmhouse (Rock Lodge) was located within the site. The house is now derelict and has been gutted by fire.

Prior to test trenching a geophysical survey was commissioned.  When the survey was completed the proposed trench layout took the results into account. Two isolated positive anomalies were identified in the survey and these were investigated in the two of the trenches and were revealed to have been derived from natural variation in the soil. Many recent deposits of materials were identified in the stone-walled haggard lying to the east of Rock Lodge and in the area close to Gracedieu Road. No features or finds of antiquity and no soil anomalies indicative of possible features of archaeological significance were apparent.
