As part of a request for further information Waterford County Council requested an archaeological assessment to include geophysical survey and testing for a proposed housing development and associated site works at Newtown Glen, Tramore, Co. Waterford.
Following completion of the geophysical survey the results were made available to inform the archaeological testing and the proposed trench layout and method statement approved by the Department of Arts, Heritage & Gaeltacht. Twelve test trenches were excavated to provide a comprehensive coverage of the site as well as to specifically investigating potential features/anomalies identified in the geophysical survey. The geophysical anomalies were interpreted as furrows that may have been created by plough cultivation but may be also related to spade cultivation in the past. One other feature was a field boundary ditch corresponding to one recorded on the first edition OS map suggesting it may have been of post-medieval to early modern date. The testing did not reveal any features or finds of antiquity and no soil anomalies indicative of possible features of archaeological significance were apparent.
