Groundworks were monitored and investigations were carried out during improvements to services at Dungarvan Castle in 2011, funded by the OPW.

Investigations in and around the south-west tower discovered that the tower foundations were poorly bonded, and the long base batter is a remodelling of an original short batter.

Building remains behind the south curtain wall are associated with a deliberate lowering of the ground level, and probably a simultaneous infilling of the ditch around the keep. The west curtain wall may have been built, and the ditch infilled, before the late 14th century.

More recent material deposited on top of the gatehouse at Dungarvan Castle was removed onto late medieval debris and surfaces. A piece of fallen wall was removed.
