A programme of monitoring for the Waterford Grouped Towns and Villages Sewerage Scheme, Contract Nr. 2 Ballyduff/Kilmeaden was carried out at the west side of the scheme through greenfield areas at old Ballyduff village in the townland of Ballyduff between 26–29 March 2012. A second phase of work was carried out on the east side of the scheme at a stream crossing at Kilmeaden on the 9 May 2012.
Monitoring revealed that the area of the development had cover (0.3m average depth) of mid-reddish brown silty clay topsoil. The underlying subsoil was light yellow brown silty clay. Located c. 100m south-west of the proposed Ballyduff pump station, adjacent to a small stream, an area was identified as a substantial peat deposit (14m by 3.5m) orientated north-east/south-west. The deposit was investigated by hand and deemed non-archaeological.
On the 9 May 2012 the banks of the stream at Kilmeaden were also stripped of topsoil. The crossing point was adjacent to a carpark immediately south of the bridge on the main street through Kilmeaden. The south side of the stream had been embanked with material form the clinic carpark up to 1m deep while the north side was topsoil 0.4m deep. No archaeological features were identified in the exposed natural subsoil.
