Pre-development test trenching was undertaken from 30 March–2 April 2011 at a proposed development site at lands approximately 140m east of 40 Dromore Road, Omagh, Co. Tyrone. The evaluation works were associated with a Planning Application which provides for the development of the site for residential dwellings and community facilities, to include all road infrastructure, landscaping and services.
A total of c. 2,180m of linear trenching was excavated under supervision within the boundaries of the proposed development area. Removal of topsoil within Test Trenches 1.01–1.11 and Trenches 2.01–2.19 revealed natural glacial subsoil at a depth of 0.25–0.35m. The subsoil was generally undisturbed although deep ploughmarks were identified within portions of several of the trenches.
No previously unidentified archaeological features or deposits were identified during evaluation works at the site with the exception of a possible truncated post-hole within Trench 1.04, 22m from its north-west end. This discrete feature was circular on plan and measured c. 0.2m in diameter with a maximum depth of 80mm. It was filled with a dark brown sandy clay deposit with frequent small sub-rounded stones and infrequent charcoal flecking.
