Following on from test excavation and building assessment in 2011 (Excavations 2011, No. 550), monitoring was carried out during demolition and construction works at Annfield townland, Bouladuff, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
The development lies within the confines of TN040-010, classified as ‘house possible’ in the Register of Monuments and Places and consisting of the late 17th/early 18th-century remains of Annfield House. The house was constructed by the Mathew family of Thurles.
Permission was granted for the removal of a late 18th/early 19th-century farm building later adapted for use as the family home to the immediate north of Annfield House. Continuous inspection was carried out during demolition works. No ground reduction was required in the area occupied by this house and no archaeological features or additional fabric was noted.
Monitoring of the foundations for the new milking parlour was also carried out. The pad foundations were all located so as to avoid masonry structures and quarry tile floors. No further late 17th/early 18th-century fabric was exposed. Deep excavation for slatted waste tanks and dairy milking pit was monitored. No archaeological material was found.
