Prior to the development of the N4 Ardloy Road Improvement Scheme, a programme of testing was carried out by Fintan Walsh of IAC Ltd (Excavations 2011, No. 533, 11E097). This resulted in the identification of one area of archaeological potential (Ardloy 1), which was excavated in December 2012.
The site consisted of four pits, a curvilinear gully and a straight linear feature. One of the pits contained a sherd, four fragments and five crumbs from an early Neolithic Carinated bowl and a single unidentified piece of burnt bone. It is likely that the archaeological remains represent Neolithic activity, although a C14 date is currently being obtained in order to complete post-excavation analysis.
