Monitoring was carried out over a 6 month period ending in March 2012. The groundworks are part of the proposed Sligo Water Conservation Stage 3, Advanced Mains Rehabilitation Phase 1. The Civil Works for the project involve the relaying of approx. 15.5km of existing mains in Sligo Town and in the vicinity of Monasteraden and Gorteen, Co. Sligo. For the most part excavations followed the line of existing services along carriage-ways limiting the direct impact on previously undisturbed layers. The groundworks depending on terrain, geology and verge space, were a mix of open cut trenching and directional drilling. Typically the drilled areas involved installing 100m sections of pipe with a launch pad and receiving pit at either terminal. These pits were dug to a maximum depth of 1.5m by 3m long by 1.2m wide. Full time monitoring was carried out along the roadway between a court tomb (SL044-051) and Moygara castle (SL044-052), and near the church and graveyard at Monasteraden (SL046-014). Elsewhere regular site inspections took place along the route in areas of archaeological potential. Throughout the course of the works no material, finds or features of archaeological significance were noted.
