Additional testing was required in three areas in the townland of Toobrackan as part of the N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass. This programme of work follows on from three previous phases of testing on the bypass. In 2009 Headland Archaeology carried out targeted testing under licences 09E0475 (Nial O’Neill, Excavations 2009, No. 699) and 09E0476 (Tara Doyle, Excavations 2009, No. 688). A second phase of testing was carried out by IAC Ltd in 2010. Work within Toobrackan (Areas 5-7) were carried out under licence 10E0299 by James Kyle and resulted in the identification of two archaeological sites (Toobrackan 3 and 4) (Excavations 2010, No. 563). These were excavated under licences 10E0382 and 10E0383 (Excavations 2010, Nos 586-7). In 2011 additional testing was carried out in the townland by Dave Bayley, IAC Ltd (Excavations 2011, No. 531, 10E0299 ext). This resulted in the identification of a burnt mound, which was preserved in situ. During the 2012 phase of testing, three areas within Toobrackan were targeted for assessment. A total of 322 linear metres were excavated but nothing of archaeological significance was identified.
